Privacy policy
Mise is an ad-free recipe site and a service your AI assistant can use, operated by von Rexroad LLC (“we”). This page says what we collect, why, who it goes to, and what you can do about it. Short version: we collect what it takes to run your kitchen, we never show ads, and we never sell anything that identifies you.
Reading needs no account
You can browse, search, scale, print and text recipes without signing in. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies; the only cookie we set keeps you signed in. Like any website, our servers see your IP address and browser. We use them to deliver pages and limit abuse, our hosting and rate-limiting services keep them briefly in their logs, and we don't use them for anything else.
What we collect when you have an account
- Your account. Your name and email address from Google or Apple when you sign in, and your profile photo if you use Google. We don't get your password.
- Sign-in sessions. The IP address and browser of each signed-in session, so you stay signed in and we can spot misuse. They're stored with each session and removed when you delete your account.
- What you make and save. Recipes and versions you publish, photos, ratings and reviews, saved recipes, shopping lists, meal plans and pantry items.
- Your preferences. Household size, units, ingredients to avoid, cuisines, skill, equipment, store and ZIP code.
- Allergies and diets, only if you agree to it. We use them for one thing: hiding and flagging recipes. They're never sold, shared, put in usage counts or combined trends, or used to infer anything about you.
- Connected assistants. Which assistants you connected and when they last used Mise.
Your public profile
Once you publish a recipe, tapping your name on it opens your public page, mise.how/cook/<handle>. By default it shows only your display name and your public recipes and versions. Your photo, about-me text, location, cooking interests and links appear there only after you turn on Show my photo and about me in Settings, and you can turn it off again any time. Your profile never shows your email, allergies, diet, preferences, saved recipes, lists or pantry. Anyone can report a profile; a moderator can hide its photo or text, never the account. Deleting your account removes the profile and its photo.
AI assistants
When you connect Mise to an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT, Mise receives only the requests the assistant makes on your behalf (for example, "search for chili recipes" or "save this recipe"). We never receive your conversation. We log which tools are used, without your name or anything you said, to keep the service working and to improve it. You can disconnect an assistant in Settings or in the assistant itself.
Usage counts and cook times (coming soon)
We're adding these now, and this is how they will work. We'll count how recipes are used: views, shares, prints, saves, versions, ratings, cooks and grocery handoffs. Chefs see these as totals for their recipes, never who did what. Counts can include a coarse region (state or country), never your precise location; you can turn that off in Settings.
When you check off a recipe's steps or start its timers, we'll record how long the cook took. Combined across cooks, that gives every recipe a realistic time range. If you're signed in, it also gives you a personal estimate based on your own pace, which only you (and assistants you connect) can see.
Who else gets data
- Things you publish are public: recipes, versions, reviews and their photos show your name as you chose it.
- Grocery delivery: when you choose to order, we send the items on your list to the grocery service (Instacart today). Their privacy policy covers what happens there.
- Service providers who run Mise for us, under contracts that limit use to that work: hosting (Vercel), database (Neon), photo storage (Cloudflare), rate limiting (Upstash), sign-in (Google, Apple), and an AI service (Anthropic) that may check the quality of uploaded photos. Photos have their location and camera data removed before they're stored.
- The law: if a valid legal request requires it, or to protect people from harm.
Combined trends, and your choice to opt out
We don't sell your personal information. We may license combined, de-identified trends to food brands and grocers, such as how often an ingredient is bought in a region in a month. These are built from many cooks at once, are only released when a group is large enough that no one can be picked out, and never include allergies, diets or anything that identifies you.
Turn on Do not sell or share my data in Settings (or ask your assistant to) and you're left out of those trends entirely. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal while you're signed in, we turn it on for you.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can see, download, correct and delete your data. In Settings you can download your account, preferences, recipes, reviews, saved recipes, lists and meal plans as a file, and delete your account. Deleting removes your account, sign-ins, preferences, lists, saved recipes, reviews and the photos you uploaded with them, and either deletes your published recipes or keeps them (with their photos) under "A Mise cook", your choice. For anything the download doesn't include, write to us. Residents of Colorado, California and other states with privacy laws can also opt out of sale and of targeted advertising (we don't do targeted advertising) and appeal a decision by writing to us. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
How long we keep things
Your account data stays until you delete it. Detailed usage records, once we collect them, will be deleted after 13 months; totals built from them are kept. Copies in database backups expire on the backups' normal schedule.
Children
Mise isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think we have, write to us and we'll delete it.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell signed-in cooks before it takes effect. Questions or requests: privacy@mise.how.
